History
Boughton dates back to the 11th century and is recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086, where it was listed as a settlement of about 39 households.
The name “Boughton” is believed to derive from “Bucca,” meaning a goat farm.
Historically the area developed through agriculture, including hop-growing, and evolved significantly in the 20th century.
Landmarks and Local Features
St Matthew’s Church, built in 1868 in the Gothic Revival style, is a Grade II listed Anglican parish church.
Boughton Pumping Station, opened in 1905, once supplied drinking water to Nottingham and has since been restored for modern use.
Boughton once had its own railway station (1897–1955). The line still exists for non-passenger use.
Landscape and Community Character
The village is surrounded by fields and woodland, giving it a semi-rural character.
Agriculture historically played a central role in the area’s development.
Following its merger with Ollerton and growth driven by nearby mining and housing expansion in the 20th century, Boughton today combines historic village identity with its role within a larger parish community.
